Lazio are reportedly prepared to sell Federico Marchetti to Liverpool as they look to promote Etrit Berisha to first-choice at the Stadio Olimpico, according to Football Italia.
Liverpool had been linked with the 33-year-old keeper in January when Jurgen Klopp looked to line up a replacement for Simon Mignolet following a string of unconvincing displays from the Belgian.
Marchetti only signed a new contract extension in January, keeping him at Lazio until 2018, but he is not prepared to sit on the bench with Berisha as the first-choice.
Although he has fallen out of favour with Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi, Marchetti is a vastly experienced stopper, having been capped by Italy 11 times.
Liverpool reportedly approached the Biancocelesti in January, only to be rebuffed, but Klopp and the Reds are thought to be keen on reviving their interest in the player.
Klopp was also said to be interested in signing Galatasary keeper Fernando Muslera, although the 29-year-old Uruguayan international would cost around £15m, while Marchetti would be significantly less, despite his contract extension.
Mignolet is seen as a capable first-choice although he is prone to high-profile errors, and signed a new five-year deal in January, with Klopp saying he was ‘perfect’ for the club.
“There’s been a lot of games since I’ve been here and Simon, as is normal for a goalkeeper, has been involved in one or another goal we’ve conceded,” the German said.
“But we thought about it overall and as a package, Simon Mignolet is, for us, perfect because he’s a smart guy, he’s young enough to develop in the things he has to develop and he gives us all a good feeling when he is in the starting line-up.”
