Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is looking to bring Udinese full back Silvan Widmer to Anfield as cover for Nathaniel Clyne.

Reported in GazzetaMercato, a subsection of Italian outlet La Gazzeta Dello Sport, the Anfield side are interested in the 23-year-old’s signature.

At the age of just 23, Widmer has already racked up over 80 Serie A appearances during his time in Italy, with his impressive performances seeing him receive seven international appearances for Switzerland to date.

However, Widmer did not feature at this summer’s Euro 2016 in France, where the Swiss reached the last 16 before being knocked out by Poland on penalties.

After enjoying a successful 2014-15 season, Widmer failed to kick on in the 2015-16 season, unable to force his way into Vladimir Petković’s final 23.

Last season Liverpool’s first choice full back Nathaniel Clyne was the top appearance maker for the club, featuring 55 times in the 2015-16 campaign.

Clyne was replaced on just 8 occasions last time out, and Klopp is understood to be interested in providing cover for Clyne, should he suffer an injury or a dip in form.

Should Klopp decide to add Widmer to his playing squad, he may be forced to pay over the odds for the player, with his contract with Udinese set to run until 2020.

According to the report, Liverpool are set to face competition for the talented full back’s signature. Udinese’s Serie A rivals Napoli are also interested in the player, as they look to provide cover for Elseid Hysaj.

The report highlights that the defender has given no indication as to his preference over the potential transfer.
